Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that included little previously unseen data.
